Stroke Development

Learn to Swim with Skill and Confidence

Private and Group Lessons for Kids Ready to Go Beyond the Basics

Once your child has mastered basic water safety and self-rescue, it’s time to build their skills with stroke development lessons. At SwimKids, we teach the four main strokes—freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. We recommend stroke development lessons for kids 5+.

Levels 7–10 are our dedicated stroke development levels, designed to build on the essential safety and self-rescue skills mastered in Levels 1–6.

OUR APPROACH TO WATER SAFETY & SKILL BUILDING

Choose Your Format: Private, Group, or Combo

We offer private and small group lessons, for you to choose the best format for your child.

Private Stroke Lessons

Best for younger kids, kids who benefit from one-on-one attention or want to focus on specific strokes. Private instruction allows your child to progress at their own pace with guidance customized to their strengths and challenges.

Group Stroke Classes

Great for kids motivated by peers and enjoy swimming in a team-like setting. Our small class sizes ensure your child still receives personal feedback, while gaining social connection, fun, and positive peer encouragement.

Combo Approach

Looking for a balanced path? Many families choose to combine private and group lessons—using private sessions to fine-tune stroke technique and group classes to build endurance, reinforce skills, and enjoy the energy of a team environment. It’s an ideal way to accelerate progress while keeping swimming fun and social.

Why Stroke Development Matters

Learning strokes builds more than just swimming skill—it supports your child’s overall development. Stroke work helps children:

  • Develop strength, coordination, and stamina
  • Prepare for future swim team or school swim programs
  • Enjoy swimming as a lifelong activity for fitness and fun
  • Build important neural connections—studies show that swimmers tend to be stronger problem-solvers and learners!
